A Place To Bury Strangers have signed a worldwide deal with UK based record label, Mute. On Friday, April 17, the band will appear at the 2009 Coachella Music Festival in Indio, CA. They will also headline this year's PsychFest in Austin, TX, on Saturday March 15. The band is currently in the studio working on an as-yet untitled sophomore album. Release date is TBD.
"We are incredibly excited to sign with Mute," says frontman and guitarist Oliver Ackermann. "They have put out some of our favorite music over the years. I can't think of a label that better fosters experimentally creative music."
The Brooklyn based three-piece have earned their reputation as the "loudest band in New York" - cops shut down their 2007 CMJ performance, and the band has been known to blow the power out of venues. Their sonically overdriven sound is no accident; it is a carefully cultivated entity, fostered by an unbridled passion that is evident in every live show they play and every recording they make.
"The pleasure pain threshold has rarely been more blurred, but rock this ferociously soulful is only good for you if it hurts," said NME as they noted A Place To Bury Strangers as on of the Ten Best Bands of SXSW 2008. Their debut release earned them a "best new music" distinction and enduring support from Pitchfork, and they have toured with the likes of Nine Inch Nails, MGMT, Holy F**k, the Dandy Warhols and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
The Village Voice calls them "pedal whiz kids," which should come as no surprise as Ackermann builds custom guitar pedals (see deathbyaudio.net). Rounding out the band are Jono Mofo on bass and the relentless drumming of Jay Space. A Place To Bury Strangers does not so much play songs as allow them to pour out. They write songs about longing, heartbreak and confusion and play them extremely well at a passionately loud volume.
