Alain Johannes released his album "Spark" this week, which SPIN praises for being "one of the most deeply-felt and confessional albums of the year." Next up, Johannes will be hitting the road in November opening for Fistful of Mercy, the new band made up of Ben Harper, Joseph Arthur, and Dhani Harrison. Though "Spark" is his debut solo release, Johannes has been beloved by fans across the globe for years thanks to his collaborations with artists like Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vutures, Chris Cornell, and Brody Dalle's Spinerette. This record is the moment when Alain's strengths as a songwriter, vocalist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist are finally showcased all at once.
"Spark" is an ode to Natasha Shneider, Johannes' late wife and creative partner who passed away in 2008. From beginning to end, the albumshowcases the remarkable technical precision and versatility that has made Johannes such an in-demand guitar player. It also reveals him to be far more than a rock guitarist, with elements of classical, flamenco, and Indian music displayed throughout. Tying it all together is his ability to craft melodies ripe with nuance, which is what truly makes each of the eight tracks captivating and emotionally resonant.
