Alessi's Ark Announces Third LP "The Still Life"

Alessi's Ark will release her third full-length album, The Still Life, on April 30th, 2013, via Bella Union. The Still Life is a rich 13-song collection, imbued with a reflective sparkle by young singer/songwriter Alessi Laurent-Marke. The album finds Laurent-Marke moving forward, away from the acoustic guitar base of previous recordings and immersing her songs in different, more varied sound settings.

Urgent and evocative opener "Tin Smithing" sets the tone with staccato vocals and the plinking sounds of electric guitar and kalimba, while the rhythmic "The Rain" is enriched by ambient flourishes. The modern bluesy sway of "Big Dipper" segues into a spooky, electronic take on The National's "Afraid of Everyone," and "Sans Balance" is an enchanting, out-of-time ballad sung in both English and French. "Money" has an easy, barroom sing-along swing before The Still Life closes with the melancholic waltz "Pinewoods." Backed by a revolving cast of contributing musicians (her own 'ark'), Laurent-Marke's syrupy voice weaves glowing, engaging songs that share a sense of lightness, with nature and love as common threads.

All tracks on The Still Life save two (producer Nic Nell captured "Sans Balance" and "Afraid of Everyone" in his South London home) were recorded over three weeks last summer in Athens, GA by producer Andy LeMaster (of Now It's Overhead; producer of Drive-By Truckers, Bright Eyes, Azure Ray), who accents them with a warm, shimmering finish. Jake Bellows of Neva Dinova and The Whispertown 2000 provides guest vocals on six songs as well.

The London-native Laurent-Marke - who began composing songs at age 16 to pass her secondary school music exam - self-released her debut EP as Alessi's Ark, 2007's Bedroom Bound, as a teenager and first traveled to the US to record her debut album Notes from the Treehouse (2009, EMI/Virgin) with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit, Rilo Kiley). Her most recent release, 2011's Time Travel (Bella Union), caught the attention of press including the BBC, Consequence Of Sound, The Guardian ("...what a beguiling thing it is"), MOJO, NME, Popmatters, and The Washington Post. Alessi's Ark has toured in the UK, Europe, and US, with artists including Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling, and Laura Veirs, among others. 2013 North American touring news will be announced soon.
