'Black' is definitely back in on this first day of spring as Universal Republic soul newcomer
Amy Winehouse surpassed all expectations and rocketed to the #7 spot on Billboard's Top Ten Album chart with her debut album Back To Black. The new album moved 50,888 copies, an impressive opening week entry bowing as one of the week's top sellers in both traditional and digital music domains. The British siren, hailed by Newsweek Magazine as a cross between Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill, recently reached the #1 plateau in England, snagging the coveted Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist.
Winehouse's brassy mix of emotive vocals tinged with 60's girl-group stylings, sly funk and jazz has fueled songs such as "Rehab," and "You Know I'm No Good," toward the top of R&B and Modern Rock Radio playlists, with the sultry singer's videos quickly becoming staples of VH1 and MTV, as well.
Cited by dozens of critics as one of the best new voices to emerge in 2007, the New York Daily News has called Back To Black a "marvelous debut that would do Etta James proud," while New Yorker Magazine called Winehouse "a fierce English performer whose voice combines the smoky depths of a jazz chanteuse with the heated passion of a soul singer." Back To Black was produced by street-smart production gurus Mark Ronson (Christina Aguilera) and Salaam Remi (Fugees).
Universally hailed as a riveting live performer, Winehouse made her much buzzed-about American network television debut on The Late Show With David Letterman on March 12, performing a rousing version of "Rehab." The singer also recently wowed a star-studded audience at Los Angeles' The Roxy, on March 19. Backed by a 9-piece band (including horn section), and possessing 'songwriting talents that outclasses most of her peers' - according to the Los Angeles Times - Winehouse served up unforgettable live renditions from Back To Black. Among her upcoming performances is The Tonight Show With Jay Leno (April 24), as well as the much anticipated show at the Coachella Music & Arts Festival in Indio, CA (April 27).
