Midwest Punk Icons The Meatmen Tackle LA's Germs For Record Store Day

Record Store Day, America's greatest unpaid national holiday, is upon us again this Saturday, April 16, and Michigan's hardcore punk instigators The Meatmen have been celebrating all month, pollinating West Coast venues from Seattle to San Diego with confetti-filled live fiestas and uptempo book readings by mainman Tesco Vee. His 576-page book Touch And Go: The Complete Hardcore Punk Zine '79-'83 has garnered hosannahs from the hoi polloi of hardcore-Ian MacKaye, Henry Rollins, Keith Morris, John Brannon, and others-and year-end kudos from Decibel, Spin, Pitchfork, Crawdaddy, and dozens more.

Launching Touch and Go Records and sending tender hearts into tears, the Meatmen have earned their place alongside the Stooges, The Fix, and Negative Approach in Michigan punk rock history. Now comes the ultimate buckdown, as the Meatmen tackle LA punk legends the Germs on their own turf, with a limited 7" offering one brand new Meatmen anthem and two Germs clean-ups, available first-hand from the Meatmen and at Orange County punk stronghold TKO Records (18948 Brookhurst Street, Fountain Valley, CA 92708).

TKO Records and the Meatmen will break open the stash on Record Day's Eve, Friday, April 15, slapping pizza, drinks, balloons, Touch And Go books, and Meatmen vinyl into the hands of proud California punks. Not to be outdone, Las Vegas' Zia Records Eastern (4225 S. Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV) is hosting a Record Store Day blowout with a Tesco Vee Touch And Go reading at 6PM ET.

Will the Meatmen sell out of vinyls by sundown Friday? Will Glenn Danzig appear to sing Tesco's praises at the TKO Records party? Can the Meatwagon haul its hot wheels 12,000 miles across burning desert in time to save Record Store Day? And what about the dozens of other cities still waiting for their first-generation hardcore punk indoctrination?

Well, they say only the true record buyer knows... only the record buyer knows.
