WXPN Brings SXSW Music And Media Conference Experience To Philadelphia

WXPN is bringing the SXSW Music and Media Conference to Philadelphia this year with a series of live and pre-recorded broadcasts, artist interviews, a live listening party, free music downloads and more. The SXSW Music and Media Conference will be held Wednesday, March 17-Sunday, March 21 in Austin, TX.

WXPN will offer its listeners extensive on-air and online coverage of the acclaimed music festival. In addition to concerts and events, XPN will provide listeners with artist interviews, reports and live performance sessions through the XPN website. WXPN Assistant GM for Programming Bruce Warren will report live from the festival via Twitter (@wxpnfm and @somevelvetblog) and through the WXPN Facebook Page.

For the second year, WXPN and NPR Music are offering a free iTunes Music Sampler that includes 10 songs from artists featured this year at SXSW. Listeners can enter a code (X4LN7LH4WXPW) at the iTunes store to download the free music sampler which is available now through April 30.

"We're totally excited to bring the best of South By to our listeners in Philly and beyond," said Warren. "Connecting artists with audiences is our mission, and we can't wait to discover new music and share this amazing festival with our listeners."

The following is the schedule of SXSW on-air highlights to be broadcast on WXPN:

  • Thursday, March 18
    • Live broadcast of NPR Music's daytime concert at the Parish from 1:30- 6:00 p.m. EST. The concert will feature headliner Sleigh Bells (5:15-6:00 p.m.) plus performances by The Smith Westerns (1:30-2:00 p.m.), Brooklyn Rider (2:15-2:45 p.m.), Local Natives (3:00-3:30 p.m.), G-Side (3:45-4:15 p.m.) and Surfer Blood (4:30-5:00 p.m.).
  • Friday, March 19
    • Live broadcast from the SXSW Convention Center from 4:00-7:00 p.m. EST featuring performances by Diane Birch (4:00-4:30 p.m.), Citizen Cope (4:50-5:10 p.m.), The Courtyard Hounds (5:30-5:50 p.m.) and Jakob Dylan (6:10-6:50 p.m.). The broadcast will be hosted by Warren.
    • XPN will host a live listening party at Standard Tap (2nd and Poplar Streets in Philadelphia) from 4:00-7:00 p.m. where Philadelphia-area listeners can gather and experience the Friday broadcast. Assistant Music Director Mike Vasilikos will be attending
    • XPN will air a live performance by Spoon from the NPR Music showcase at Stubbs on March 17. The Spoon performance will air at 8:00 p.m.
  • Monday, March 22
    • XPN will air live performances by Broken Bells and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings from 8:00-10:00 p.m. which were recorded during the NPR Music showcase on March 17.
  • Tuesday, March 23
    • XPN will rebroadcast the Spoon performance from the NPR Music showcase at 8:00 p.m.

Now in its 24th year, the SXSW Music and Media Conference is the must-attend networking event for the 21st century music industry. Showcasing nearly 2,000 musical acts from around the globe on more than 80 stages in downtown Austin, SXSW registrants have a first-look at tomorrow's stars.
