"Be Your Own Pet"

(Ecstatic Peace/Universal Records 2006)Be Your Own Pet - Be Your Own Pet

Nashville teen rockers Be Your Own Pet certainly know their musical history. Signed to Ecstatic Peace, the label founded by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, the band's debut self-titled full-length is pounding punk rock that rarely stops. Snarling and sharing their snotty point of view, Be Your Own Pet also know how to have fun.

Garage punk taken to a studio and recorded precisely, Be Your Own Pet thrash and flail as expected. "Bunk Trunk Skunk" sees singer Jemina Pearl squealing. "Have fun and be safe with it/Just kidding, fuck shit up," she declares on "Bicycle Bicycle, You Are My Bicycle" as drums take control, mingling with guitar riffs. Elsewhere, on "Bog," Pearl sings of drowning ex-boyfriends while demonstrating how big of a voice she has as she flip flops between matching the melody and letting loose a few screams. Be Your Own Pet throw you for a loop with "October, First Account," their best attempt at an odd ballad, steeped in 60s influence, that takes some liberties.

Tearing through their album without so much as a look back, Be Your Own Pet keep up their derivative, predictable rock 'n' roll assault without apology. While the entire album might blend together, blurring the boundaries until the music sounds like one long song, Be Your Own Pet certainly give it a high energy and earnest shot. For Be Your Own Pet, it is not a matter of how you got from point A to point B, but if you had a good time doing it.
