Matt And Kim - January 29, 2009

Chop Suey, Seattle, WA
January 29, 2009

If you're looking for a somber, serious affair, a Matt & Kim concert is the last place on earth you should be. If you want fun and happy, however, they've got it and lots of it.

You'd be hard pressed to find two people happier to perform for you. Brooklyn's Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino love to be on stage. On top of that, they claim to have a special love for Seattle. Johnson said his first time ever on the West Coast was in the rainy city. They celebrated Schifino's birthday in Seattle last time they played. In keeping with tradition, this time around it was Johnson's birthday.

The band played songs from their new album "Grand," which had just hit stores earlier in the week, as well as songs from their first self-titled album. The show was packed and the crowd was definitely into it. There was even some crowd surfing going on. Johnson asked for white lights to be turned on before playing certain songs because he had nothing to hide. There was tons of audience interaction, which helped break up what could have been a monotonous set as the duo's songs are a bit formulaic. Vocals and instruments were both on key.

Much to Schifino's embarrassment, after playing "5k" Johnson regaled the audience with stories of Schifino's former track coach, for whom the song was written and who apparently liked to give thigh massages and once gifted her with red panties.

The concert ended with a countdown that somehow involved half songs and playing "Final Countdown." The last song in the countdown was "Silver Tiles." After that the band's official birthday song, 50 Cent's "In Da Club," was blasted in honor of Johnson's birthday, and, as promised, there was a dance party. Show highlights included "Lightspeed," "Yeah Yeah," and "Daylight."
