Melissa Auf der Maur
"Out Of Our Minds"

(PHI-MAdM Music 2010)Melissa Auf der Maur - Out Of Our Minds

Former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur’s second solo album, "Out Of Our Minds," is big, or rather the sound is. Auf der Maur doesn’t hold back as she tries to bring to life her visions of grandiosity. As the saying goes: go big or go home, right? Needless to say with such aspirations, she’ll need an impressive team. Luckily she’s got quite the line-up involved on the album: Chris Goss, Jeordie White, James Iha...the list goes on.

While Auf der Maur has quite the team to collaborate with, none make such an obvious appearance as Mr. Glenn Danzig. Sounding not completely his self, Danzig duets with Auf der Maur on murder ballad “My Father’s Grave.” (What else would you expect him to sing about?) On the album’s title track, Auf der Maur’s vocals echo over the dramatic but poppy heavy rock while the memorable guitar riff repeated on “Isis Speaks” makes an impression as she leans towards a more metal sound. Elsewhere, she throws in some interesting and decent instrumentals (“The Hunt,” “Lead Horse”) but at odd times that end up unnecessarily breaking up the album’s flow.

Auf der Maur’s “Out Of Our Minds” comes across strongly. With each twist and turn of the music there’s a bell or a whistle. In fact, by the end, she’s been so busy somersaulting for your appreciation that a little simplicity here and there would have been nice. In the end, it’s mostly a matter of taste. Those who dig big production values and poppy metal/hard rock might find the album of interest as there’s something here for everyone.
