Monster Magnet
"4-Way Diablo"

(SPV 2007)Monster Magnet - 4-Way Diablo

While many of the rock bands that a decade or so ago enjoyed success, both financial and cult, the majority, by and large, have bitten the dust a few crept through -- like Monster Magnet, for example. The New Jersey hard rock band with their stoner edge and somewhat sleazy allure somehow made it out of the '90s in one piece. But it was a close one for frontman Dave Wyndorf who overdosed in early 2006, causing the band to cancel a European tour. Apparently nothing can keep him down because later that year and in 2007 the band recorded "4-Way Diablo," their seventh studio album and one that will make believers of any who have lingering doubts.

"Well I'm back/I got a cock made out of platinum," Wyndorf announces cheekily on "Wall Of Fire," an upbeat and rocking track that is one of the album's most unforgettable. The band puts their own stamp on "Cyclone" with a doom metal vibe that beckons you in with a spacey echo. Elsewhere on the album, the band fuse their Mudhoney like garage rock thrash with a trippy sound, like on "You're Alive," while "Freeze And Pixelate" offers a dramatic Middle Eastern-flavored psych jam.

In case you were not already aware, Wyndorf and his band mates have obviously made a pact with the Devil. Not that there is anything wrong with that -- especially when Wyndorf's vocals sound as crisp as they did on "Spine of God." "4-Way Diablo" commands the charge with instrumentation that brings you to your knees with its full pounding sound that is highlighted by edgy guitar licks. Seven solid albums later, Monster Magnet are still a force to be reckoned with.
