Rocket From The Crypt
"All Systems Go III"

(Vagrant Records 2008)Rocket From The Crypt - All Systems Go III

"All Systems Go III" is the third installment of raw 8-track recordings by Rocket From The Crypt. This volume was recorded between the years of 1997 and 2000 at the band's rehearsal space. The rough feel fits the band's "punk with horns" sound like a pair of biker gloves. I'll be the first to admit that I haven't heard much RFTC, but this is a nice introduction for me personally. I never got bored with this album even though I didn't know any of the songs.

As these songs are demos, some feel unfinished and unpolished, but most of the songs benefit from the lack of a fancy recording studio production. The lyrics are generally amusing or lame, but it works because it's fun and carefree. The music is, for the most part, straight forward punk-influenced rock with horns making guest appearances here and there. Some of the tracks are very scrappy, especially the demos of "Dick on a Dog" and "When In Rome." These are high points on the album though. The rugged feeling suits the band well.

I can imagine that seasoned fans of this band will thoroughly enjoy what is included here, but the unenlightened, such as myself, may have a more difficult time getting into it as much. So, I'm highly recommending it if you're already a fan. If that's the case, you hardly need my recommendation but I'm giving it anyway.
