(Self-Released 2006)Sothen - Lookatchurself Reggie Measuresworth

The debut release from Sothen, entitled "Lookatchurself Reggie Measuresworth," is a jumble of rock 'n' roll. From bright and catchy riffs with pop sensibilities to darker, more involved instrumentation that lets the band experiment, it is difficult to classify Sothen. But it is clear from the first listen that the band has lofty expectations for their first release.

Sounding like a well-blended mix of Weezer and Everclear, Sothen are catchy as they put heavy riffs with bright, light vocals on "Blinkpt" and "I Can See." On "Farther," the band takes some chances as they experiment with a minimalist introduction that opens into a groove-driven melody with dark chords echoing throughout. Similarly, "Nerve" sees Sothen do their best Tool impression with chugging guitar riffs and strings before abandoning the hard rock sound in favor of morphing into a quick moving rock track. The band puts little sound effects throughout the album, such as on "I Will Broken Your Faces," and includes outtakes and chatter in between other tracks. Giving it one last go, the album's final track offers an intriguing melody on the riff-driven "Bight."

Sothen seem reluctant to leave, eager to keep the music going as they rely on the repetitive nature of many of the songs for longer than necessary. The result is that many of the tracks on "Lookatchurself Reggie Measuresworth" could be strengthened by way of some simple editing. More succinct versions of many of the songs would only serve to enhance Sothen's ideas and transform their brand of pop rock into something with a fresh sound.
