(Suicide Squeeze 2008)These Arms Are Snakes - Tail Swallower And Dove

Post-hardcore has been a label placed on many different bands and sub-genres. It's been misused and abused to categorize screamo, metalcore and grindcore bands. For These Arms Are Snakes though, post-hardcore is a solid definition. With "Tail Swallower And Dove," you can hear the influence of The Misfits, Black Flag, and Minor Threat. "Tail Swallower And Dove" is only a progression from that scene. The fast pounding drums, and dark guitars create a whirlwind heavy music that is counteracted by howling lead singer Steve Snere.

That's not to say it is any good. There is nothing too ground breaking with these guys. It's a very dark album, no catchy hooks, no "go back to" points in a song, it all goes in one direction: to an end point. Dark is the only descriptive word for this album. Though not being known for its sophistication, post-hardcore does seem to at least have some degree of song structure, and this album has none. It creates a gloomy feeling inside the listener. It's nothing to listen to on a sunny day in April.

"Tail Swallower And Dove" is very different from anything being put out currently by the post-hardcore scene. Involving heavy synth to push the guitar to a harder level, and the way the singer sings is not something to be looked over. With that being said, it is hard to listen to this album and give it much praise. These Arms Are Snakes are just obviously on their own level.

Don't buy this album, don't even rip it. Just listen to a few tracks on These Arms Are Snakes' MySpace first. It's really an album that gives the phrase "to each his own" new meaning. You'll either love it or hate it.
